About the Event
OPERATION: GREY SPEAR
Syria, 2011
The Uprising against President and Dictator Bashar Al Assad stems from the Arab Spring of 2011 and protests against his government of the state. Peaceful protests were met with violence and counter attacks by regime security forces directed by Assad himself and soon led to civil unrest and rebels taking up arms against government forces, uniting as the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
7 years of civil war followed. Multiple Pro-Assad groups and outside influence from other countries like Russia and Iran have led to the deposition of Assad looking unlikely but still his forces must fight on to hold their ground and keep control of the state.
During the conflict, in July 2014, a breakaway group of Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) ‘Daesh’ move into north eastern Syria over the Iraqi border claiming to control large areas and urban strongholds along the border and in north of the country. The group also calls itself the ‘Islamic State in Syria – ISIS’.
ISIS tactics and propaganda are brutal, murderous and bloody. So much so that the Al Qaeda organisation as a whole cuts all ties and claims no support for the group. Still IS calls for what it thinks is the best for a free Syrian state, its caliphate and true worship and blind following of the Muslim faith. It believes this would be the best possible leadership for Syria.
Forces in Syria and around the globe (including the US, UK, Turkey, Russia and Iran) however recognise IS as a sinister and credible threat to both Syria’s prospects to exit civil war and global security. ISIS is driven out of its urban strongholds and pushed back into the borderlands of Syria/ Iraq, although their threat and resolve to fight on remains.
With IS a reduced and retreating common enemy, many violent sieges and diverse conflicts have intensified in areas around Syria, with the situation no better than before. In the midst of the proxy war being played out by both Western and Middle Eastern nations from outside of Syria, AQ once again come to the forefront. In early 2017, AQ merges the Al Nusra Front (AQ’s official operations in Syria pre 2016/17) and Ansar Al-Din Front. These two mainly make up the numbers to create the new force ‘Hayat Tahirir Al- Sham’, that would become known as HTS and in months following are collectively identified as Al Qaeda in Syria (AQIS) sharing similarly extreme views and organised tactical command as seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
December 2018
US President Donald Trump announces a draw down and rapid pull out of US forces from Syria. Some 3000 troops are announced to be pulling out of the conflict and leaving their Kurdish allies in the northern territories of Syria to continue the fight against Assad’s regime. However it is unclear if there will be complete removal of its intelligence services and indeed the Special Operations forces that have largely orchestrated air attacks in support of Free Syrian Army (FSA) operations.
January 2019
Without clarity on American forces staying in the area and to bolster the intelligence picture on AQIS, British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), also known as MI6, deploys more field agents to the stronghold/ main area of HTS; the City of Idlib, Syria. Supported and defended covertly by UKSF operators of 22 Regiment SAS and the Special Boat Service whom make up TASK FORCE TRIDENT (TFT). As UK forces in the area deploy to achieve full capacity to carry out Intel gathering operations, things rapidly become clear that the quash of ISIS in Syria’s borders has only given way for AQIS/ HTS to grow and further their radical beliefs.
With infighting and assassinations of those who do not believe fully in the HTS vision for Syria and AQ’s plans for further afield, along with the now 1000’s of fighters coming from overseas and returning to western civilisation posing a threat of homeland terror attacks; HTS/ AQIS collectively are reassigned as a priority threat to global security. HTS are declared a Terror organisation and High priority target by multiple nations throughout the world. The UK government changes its mission from broadening the intelligence picture to Hunt/Capture/Kill of HVT’s in the Idlib area of operations for SIS and UKSF.
More UKSF and RAF assets are deployed to the region, Operation: Grey Spear is a go.
